Instrument of Thought:
A Meditation on Matter and Light

Instrument of Thought detail in window of the East Wing of Somerset House, London

Selected for Collect Open, a platform showcasing artists and artisans who extend the scope and meaning of their materials, this installation was shown at Collect International Art Fair, Somerset House, London in February 2022. Awarded an Arts Council England Lottery Grant to participate in the event, I made a short film and book about the ideas behind the work.

Using movement and the lustrous qualities of glass and metal, this mobile subtly relates to transformative scientific concepts that have reshaped our perception of the universe. Mysterious white glass shapes glide past each other, revealing ever-changing views within the airy two-metre assemblage. The construction is complemented by brass objects, a mirror, crystals and rocks hinting at ideas such as gravity, dark matter and the speed of light. The gentle sound of delicate rods tapping the glass reminds us of the invisible cosmic particles that we encounter every day.

Iā€™m interested in form, natural forces and how perception evolves over time. This mobile is a philosophical look at scientific concepts that have altered the way we perceive the qualities of matter and light in the universe.

A book about the ideas behind the artwork is on ISSUU.
